Our Commitment

All of the individuals and organizations listed on this website have committed to the following standard of service

  • If counseling or treatment is provided, ongoing outcome studies are conducted and the results are made available to the public.
  • Offers an interdisciplinary team approach, with a minimum of a registered dietitian, physician, psychiatrist, and psychologist/psychotherapist involved in treatment.
  • Alternative/complementary practitioners included in treatment can provide documentation of their training and certification, and all complementary procedures utilized have been validated as effective with an outcome study.
  • Nutrition philosophy is consistent with current scientific research.
  • Products/services promoted are done so with a minimum use of negative information about competing organizations.  If negative information is used in informational campaigns, it can be supported with documentation.  Libel, slander, and defamation are NEVER acceptable practices, regardless of who the competitor is.
  • Nutrition supplements may be recommended and sold.  However, the information promoting them must be supported by peer-reviewed research and not based solely on the personal experience of the person selling the supplement.
  • Diets specifically for weight loss are not used, the focus is instead on (1) restoring a natural response to physiological hunger and (2) replacing emotional eating patterns with healthy communication, conflict resolution, and coping skills.
  • All individuals providing treatment are able to provide documentation of their own ongoing continuing education and supervision on request.
  • Are willing to respond within 30 days to any consumer complaints sent to After the Diet Online.

The individuals and organizations listed on this website are certainly not the only ones who meet these standards of care. However, After the Diet™ Online encourages anyone seeking help to find a program that fits his/her own personality and needs, and to consider the above standards as indications that the program is committed to quality care and long-term positive outcome.

Philosophy

After the Diet™ grew out of numerous conversations Monika had with colleagues who desired to raise the standard of nutrition counseling and to discourage nutrition quackery, which can often instigate an eating disorder. After the Diet™ Network wanted to provide an alternative for those who recognized that diets do not raise self-esteem--but who could not find any other options for getting help.  After the Diet™ believes that while professionalism and accuracy are crucial when promoting health through nutrition, even more important is being human.  An endless supply of facts with no practical application may make someone's website look impressive...but if all those facts do is overwhelm, they do not provide help to those who need it.  Saying  "all it takes is willpower", insults the intelligence of the person who knows better and who needs an answer.  Testimonials are about the TALKER, not about the person needing help.

About the Network

After the Diet intentionally strives to be a network of professionals, not merely the promotional point for its founder.  Not every professional in the business will fit under this umbrella.  That's not wrong at all, we just know from experience that we are most effective when we prioritize relationships with others whose focus is on the person needing help.  It is better to do an awesome job helping one person than it is to be useless to a room full of people at their expense.

The first phase of developing this network of professionals launched in 2004.  These professionals either attended onsite or participated at home in a 20 hour training course designed to instill an integrative approach to the management of PCOS.  Currently, trained PCOS practitioners are using this program in 11 states (click here for more information).

The second phase of developing After the Diet Network will be to offer this training as a for-credit program to registered nurses.  (Click here to be notified when this becomes official!)  This expansion will allow After the Diet's philosophy to be integrated, into the practices of family nurse practitioners, lactation specialists, and diabetes educators.  Our desire is to make our educational resources available in as many health care settings as possible, and we are elated that soon we will finally achieve our goal of working side by side with our colleagues in nursing.

In the almost three years this program has been in existence, several qualities have stood out about network members:

  •     their commitment to learning and integrating complex scientific data into daily work with everyday people

  •     their entrepeneurial nature and ability to promote good health information in their respective communities

  •     their integrity

  •     their humility--focusing on helping others over receiving recognition for their own personal achievements.

After the Diet is pleased to promote, support, and encourage the members of this network in their commitment to inspiring healthy choices and personal well-being in the people they inspire every single day.

How We Define Success

Monika believes that success will come on the day she has put herself out of business--when people are too busy and happy to even want to diet.  That is the day when all that money and energy will be  focused on education, health improvement, and tolerance for all regardless of size, age, gender, religion, or culture. When that happens, she will be found at an isolated Central American beach, sipping a banana milkshake and writing children's stories. That day, unfortunately, is not today--so that is why you are reading this story!

Hopefully someday you will click on this link and find nothing because there is no need to find anything anymore...
