K. Shane Broughton, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Family and Consumer Sciences, University of Wyoming, Laramie, Wyoming. In addition to degrees from Colorado State University and Washington State University, he did his postdoctoral fellowship in the Lipids Research Laboratory in the Institute of Food Science at Cornell University. Dr. Broughton's research at the University of Wyoming focuses on evaluating the effect of diet on health and disease, focusing on the omega-3 fatty acids of marine and agricultural origin and their oxygenated derivatives. Research projects involve analysis of fatty acids and their oxygenated derivatives and an examination of their effect on inflammatory processes including ovulation and asthma. Dr. Broughton has almost 60 original and abstracts to his credit, as well as a patent submission for an asthma diagnostic tool. He is author of a book chapter on Eicosanoids, and has another book chapter submitted on Omega 3 fatty acids and asthma. In addition to his duties as a professor, Dr. Broughton serves as Wyoming's Nutrition Specialist for AIDS and HIV. |

Specializing in childhood obesity and eating disorders, she has also worked at an inpatient and partial hospitalization eating disorder program for the past 6 years. She treats anorexia, bulimia and compulsive overeating in males and females, age 6 to 60. She is also a licensed provider of the Shapedown® program for children. Her overall goal for clients with eating and weight problems is to help them have happier and healthier futures where weight becomes exactly what it should be--simply a number on the scale. In addition to eating disorders, Mia helps clients fight depression and anxiety and to overcome relationship problems. In addition, she has experience helping individuals overcome emotional problems affecting their physical health. She does a great deal of teaching in her therapy and uses dialectical behavioral therapy skills training as one model. In addition she teaches inner child work as well as approaching therapy from a family systems perspective. She greatly believe in using an individual or family's strengths to help them overcome their current problems. Because of her background in social work, Mia emphasizes the systems impacting the person and their family. She especially enjoys working with families and witnessing change and growth within the family system. |

Marlene P. Freeman, M.D., Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Obstetrics & Gynecology, University of Arizona College of Medicine, Tucson, Arizona. Marlene P. Freeman, M.D. established and directs the Women’s Mental Health Program at the University of Arizona. She is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Obstetrics & Gynecology at the U of A College of Medicine. Dr. Freeman graduated from Northwestern University Medical School and the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Program. She completed a fellowship in Biological Psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Freeman’s clinical and research interests are mood and anxiety disorders in women, with a focus on reproductive events. Current research includes treatment and screening studies for depression during pregnancy, postpartum, and perimenopause. Dr. Freeman has received research funding from several federal and state sponsors, including the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Arizona Disease Control Research Commission (ADCRC), the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD). |

Erica Goble, Woman With PCOS, Phoenix, Arizona As a young woman, Erica realized something was not quite right with her internal systems. After a long road of unanswered questions, humiliating symptoms and a lonely reality, Erica discovered she had Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Along her journey, Erica developed an incredible understanding and acceptance of herself and her body, as it us, unaltered by Atkins or Food Combinations! It’s been a challenging and enlightening experience of self-study. Counseling has especially helped Erica to accept her diagnosis and thrive! Ultimately, Erica learned to embrace herself, and even her PCOS. Now, she is excited about her journey and eager to share with and learn from the expertise represented at the conference. |

Robert Kauffman, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Amarillo, Texas. Dr. Kauffman is an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Amarillo, Texas. Currently he is Director of the Program in Reproductive Medicine & Infertility and Interim Director of Clinical Research in Obstetrics & Gynecology. His special interests include polycystic ovary syndrome, hirsutism, the role of insulin in reproduction, and postmenopausal hormone therapy. Current ongoing research involvement includes (1) study of reproductive sequelae of depression, (2) role of the hormone adinopectin in PCOS, (3) study of Mexican-American women with PCOS, (4) analysis ofputative markers for insulin resistance in pregnancy and their ability to preduct adverse pregnancy outcomes. Dr. Kauffman is a reviewer for 3 major medical journals and active in medical student and resident education in reproductive medicine. He has been active in his county medical society as editor of the journal, Panhandle Health, and currently serves as chairman of the Physician Health and Rehabilitation Committee. |

Elisabeth Peterson, R.D., Peterson Nutrition and Fitness, Richmond, Virginia. Elisabeth C. Peterson is a registered dietitian, medical nutrition therapist, nutrition consultant, and health educator. Her practice offers a full range of nutritional and lifestyle empowering services, including classroom education, individual and group consults, and services for hospitals, physicians, pharmaceutical companies, and corporations. She is contracted to provide services to Commonwealth Clinical Research Specialists, Inc. and Virginia Women's Center, an OB/Gyn practice providing health care to 50,000 women in the greater Richmond, Virginia area. Ms. Peterson is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Hampton University, where she received the Honor Council's Award for Outstanding Achievement in Human Ecology. Ms. Peterson is a member of the American Dietetic Association and its affiliated Women's Health and Reproduction and Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness groups, the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Diabetes Educators, the National Eating Disorders Association, the Academy for Eating Disorders, and the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, through which she has been certified as a personal trainer and fitness counselor. Ms. Peterson was formerly corporate nutritionist for Ukrop's Super Markets, where she represented the organization in the community as a nutrition resource. She has written and taught seminars and classes on a variety of subjects including coping with food allergies, diabetes, eating smart, omega-3 fatty acids, and diet and disease. She has also worked as an outpatient dietitian for St. Mary's Hospital, where she managed the outpatient nutrition center and taught nutrition classes. Ms. Peterson has experience in clinical trials, having participated in studies to normalize glycemic control in people with Type 2 diabetes and to examine healthy weight reduction and weight maintenance. She is an adjunct professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, a dietetic advisor for magazines, and author of articles on nutrition. |

Lynne Smiley, Ph.D., Nutrition Therapy Consultant, Tucson, Arizona. Lynne Smiley is a nutrition therapy consultant. She has a PhD in nutrition from the University of Arizona. Her minor is in medical anthropology, where she studied peoples' eating behavior and body image, and the meanings they attribute to food and body weight. She works with adults with food and body issues and teaches health professionals the adaptive changes in physiology that occur with psychological trauma. She has presented and been published locally and nationally on eating disorders in college campuses and is co-author of the Eating Issues Continuum. She is also on the editorial board of After the Diet Newsletter. |

Carlos Schenck, MD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, University of Minnesota School of Medicine, Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Schenck is well known for his research in the area of sleep disorders. A psychiatrist certified in clinical hypnosis based at the University of Minnesota Medical School, he has published 27 book chapters and almost 70 peer-reviewed articles and on topics related to sleep including: insomnia, REM-sleep behavior disorder, night-time eating, sleep-related injury, somnambulism, dissociative disorders, sleep violence, chronic fatigue syndrome, sleep terror, sleep-related eating disorders, narcolepsy, epilepsy, and restless leg syndrome. He is currently a reviewer for 4 different peer-reviewed journals related to sleep medicine. Dr. Schenck has also produced several documentary films related to his specialty. Frank Thorp, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics and the Committee on Nutrition and Nutritional Biology, The University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Thorp was Section Chief of Pediatric Metabolism and Nutrition and is a Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., Scholar. He directed the Pediatric Nutrition Support Service and participated in the care of over 900 children with diabetes seen annually in the Chicago Children's Diabetes Center. He directed two medical school nutrition courses and a graduate degree program in clinical nutrition. His interests include metabolic and nutrition disorders of children, including diabetes, obesity and hyperlipidemia, as well as nutrition intervention using parenteral and enteral alimentation. He was active locally and nationally with the American Diabetes Association, the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Illinois Council for the Prevention of Violence. |

Monika M. Woolsey, MS, RD,

Glendale, Arizona. Monika is a registered dietitian and exercise physiologist specializing in nutrition, stress, and mental health. She authored the American Dietetic Association's first book on Eating Disorders, Eating Disorders: A Clinical Guide to Counseling and Treatment. She is also co-author of the self-published release, Nutritional Implications of Psychotropic Medications. Her newsletter, After the Diet, specializes in issues related to the connections between nutritional choices and their impact on physical/mental health. Monika received her undergraduate degree in Nutrition from Cornell University and her Masters in Kinesiology from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She has presented on the topic of nutrition and mental health at numerous professional conferences. Her work in PCOS is based on website interviews of women with the syndrome. She is using market research techniques to understand why recommendations made by caregivers, which succeed in controlled environments, do not have the same success when applied to real-life situations. |
